Up for sale is a rare 3665-100 Minuteman box car with rocket launcher. This freight car varies from the regular production version of the 3665 for several reasons:
- First, this light blue roof variation is a one year only variation per Joe Algozzini on page 47 of his Toy Trains Reference Series 2 on Lionel's Space & Military Trains.
- Secondly, in 1963 Lionel updated the 3665 body mold -- which now borrowed features from the newly issue 3619 freight car. Specifically, this scarce version includes the 3619 body mold with a hole on one side above the "T" in Minuteman (really above the "e") and the light blue roof sections -- with the correct part numbers on their undersides. (No. 3665-12 and No. 3665-13).
All portions of the freight car are complete and not damaged nor broken but there is some minor aging on the exterior which is unfortunately extremely common on the 3665 white mold. The rocket is an original postwar rocket, the freight car features dual operating couplers and all metal parts are clean and free of rust and oxidation. Best of all, the operating mechanism works perfectly!
Lastly, an original box and instructions are also included. The box is the Orange Picture Box version complete with all 7 original flaps and no tape. Additionally, the instructions are clean, and complete without any flaws but there is light soiling on the exterior due to age.
