Now available for sale is a nice and clean 1047 Switchman with Flag with its original box, insert, instructions, track activator and much more. This hard-to-find accessory includes the rare original box as well as the rarer original insert. According to Alan Stewart's description in his "LIONEL TRAINS", 1945-1969, Volume VI; Accessories, the 1047 box was the flimsiest postwar box ever manufactured by Lionel! The box is complete with all six flaps, the original cellophane window panel is still attached but there is shelf wear on the exterior. Additionally, a complete original insert is included with the Switchman as well as a reproduction 1047-10 Part Envelope.

In operation, the 1047 Switchman with Flag is similar to the 45/145 Gateman but without his shack. Although cataloged for three years (1959 - 1961), the 1047 probably had only one production cycle in 1959 with excess inventory sold in 1960 and 1961. The accessory is largely a conglomeration of existing parts from other items with the flagman's arm being the only unique part for this accessory.

All reported examples of the 1047 have a blue fuel tank, green metal base, blue switchman with painted face, and red flag. The 1047-10 parts envelope came with the following components:

  • 145C Contactor
  • Three Green 81-32 connection wires
  • Six pieces of 264-11 Timbers
  • 145-56 instruction sheet dated 7-59
