Now available for sale is a gorgeous C & O Alco A diesel freight set from 1960. This catalogued set was one of only a few Lionel outfits when the diesel and caboose had matching road names. These Alco sets remain in demand as far fewer diesel sets were sold compared to the traditional steam locomotive set.
's premium 027 outfit in 1965 and included a AA Texas Special diesel along with five freight cars. Although it is a fairly common set, locating one in collectable condition is hard to do as these sets were extensively played with over the past 60+ years and are usually found in well used condition. Lastly, the set remains popular as it contains several colorful freight cars. All components of this set are in high collector grade and consist of the following components:
- 225 Chesapeake & Ohio Alco A diesels with the following characteristics:
- Two-position e-unit
- Dual axle drive with magnetraction
- Illuminated headlight
- Tested and works perfectly
- Condition: nice and clean, graded a 8 with no rust nor oxidation and only a couple of very minor surface marks on the rear roof. Otherwise, the front apron is complete and not cracked, repaired nor damaged.
- 6470 Exploding Box Car: Clean, complete, all three sections have all tabs and nothing is cracked, damaged nor repaired and the frame is spotless and free of rust and oxidation. Overall condition is an 8.
- 6650 Rocket Launcher: Clean, complete and free of rust and oxidation. The two minor apologies on this freight car is a hairline crack of 1/2" in the red section of the rocket and the firing mechanism is not working (which is probably due to an old diaphragm). Overall condition is a 7++.
- 6819 Flatcar with Helicopter: Clean, complete and free of damage, nicks and chips. Additionally, the wheels and axles are free of rust and the helicopter is a reproduction component. Overall condition is an 8!
- 6219 C & O Work Caboose: Gorgeous condition, clean, free of nicks, chips and damage plus the frame has all corner steps along with crisp printing on each side. Overall condition is an 8.
- 1629 Set Box: Clean, looks great, has most interior dividers and is free of writing, staining and moisture issues. Condition is an 8.
- As for "What Else" is in the set:
- 1015 transformer - tested and works, brand new and never used although there is some rust on the base and the line cord has never been opened. More-than-likely, the line cord will need replacing as parts of the cord appear to be potentially dry-rot and not safe to use.
- Original 027 gauge curve and straight track.
- 1008 Manual uncoupling track section
- Original tube of oil and lubricant
- CTC lock-on and two yellow coiled wires
- Four original Lionel billboards for 1960 (the Underwriters type writer billboard is missing)
- Correct Lionel Instruction booklet and dated 1960 on the interior of the rear cover
Don't miss out on this opportunity to purchase a clean and colorful premium 027 original Lionel train set from 1965.
