 Railroad electrification in the United States began in the early 1900’s and comprised many different systems in many different geographical areas. Peak electrification of US railroads reached 3,100 miles by the late 1930’s. However, by the early 2000’s, railroad electrification has shrunk to under 1,000 miles.

As World War II ended and Lionel was ramping up its postwar product line, it’s not surprising one of the first new postwar locomotives was the infamous GG1 electric locomotive. While the GG1 was available frequently throughout the postwar era, Lionel did offer several other realistic and scale-like electric locomotives. However, the GG1 was by far, their most popular electric locomotive.
